Geocache Navigator

I was keen to try Geocache Navigator having learnt that,

One: it is available for the N95 and

Two: it is free! http://www.geocachenavigator.com/

I have found geocaches before, with Viewranger and it is nice example of convergence, the N95 providing GPS, OS Map postioning, maybe a picture or two and access to the website. The downside are the battery life is poor, and the N95 is not water proof or rugged compared to the trusty Garmin handheld GPS.

The application is stable enough and worked well. I am sure somewhere I read the free version is Ad supported but I didnt see any adverts. It does ask permission each time it wants to connect to the internet which is a little annoying. I checked with the application manager that it is set to Ask First Time only, so not sure why it behaves like that.

What is great is that it is integrated to my Geocaching.Com account. It queries Geocaching.com in real time, and that is quite slick.

It can report your position from the GPS and report back nearby caches. You can also search the database for a cahce by location or name. You can view the entry, logs, and even report finding it.

Having identifed a cache it will take you to it, a compass view with heading and distance, a map and a "radar view". That I do like, it autoranges in as you get closer, and draws a circle estiamting the accuracy of your own position.

Ontarget

Its great, if only the map could background could be OS Map, and it would be nice to see nearby caches shown in a map view rather than just a list.

If you have never tried geocaching, take a look its great fun. Just be careful you dont drop the N95 in the mud :-)
