A Printing Block
A friend recently purchased a printing block as a gift, before it was passed on I had the opportunity to scan it. It shows the Marine Lake at Southport. If you zoom in you can find references to bandstands, the Victoria Hotel, Victoria Baths etc. It is not known where the block was used, or when - any ideas?

Hi,
ReplyDeleteLooking at the type face it's c. 1890-1920 and hence early in the park's development. Depending on the size it could have been used for anything from printing postcards to pamphlets publicising the 'new gardens'. The 'Friends of Kings Gardens' http://kingsgardens.sefton.gov.uk/ would definitely be interested in seeing it and might be able to tell you more.
Regards,
Mark Adams (Archaeologist Museum of Liverpool)

ReplyDeleteNot sure why it was ever made into a printing block but these are Thomas Mawson's original designs for Kings Gardens from his book "Civic Art" from 1911. The proposals were not adopted in full but they formed the basis on which the Kings Gardens and Marine Lake area were developed by Southport Corporation.
